How this is worked out
Each bed size covers the top of its mattress and hangs about 15–16 in down the sides and the foot. Makers’ charts differ by a few inches — the size that matters is the one that fits your bed.
For your own bed: the quilt’s width is the mattress width plus the drop on both sides; its length is the mattress length plus the drop at the foot, plus a pillow tuck (about 10 in) if you want the quilt to fold over the pillows.
Measure the drop from the top of the mattress down to where you want the quilt to end: 12 in covers a standard mattress, 16–18 in covers a box spring too.

What size is a throw quilt?
A throw is about 50 × 65 in (127 × 165 cm): big enough to cover you on the sofa. Many makers go up to 60 × 70 in.
What size is a queen quilt?
About 90 × 95 in (229 × 241 cm) for a 60 × 80 in queen mattress, hanging about 15 in over the sides and foot. Add 10 in to the length for a pillow tuck.
What size is a king quilt?
About 108 × 95 in (274 × 241 cm) for a 76 × 80 in king mattress.
What size is a baby quilt?
A baby quilt for a stroller or play mat is about 36 × 36 in; a crib quilt is about 36 × 52 in.
